Horse Power

Hi again,
I forgot the other question I had, is there any type of way to increase the hp from 210 hp short of Turboing the engines.
I love the plane so much, but do wish it had a little more power. I do know about the Rocket convertion, but thats to costly.

Mark

There was an article in September 2005 Aviation Consumer. It covered the topic of porting & polishing. This is a process of cleaning up obstructions & roughness in the intake and exhaust ports. They also discussed the benefits of grinding the valve seats. The bottom line of the story was that you could gain up to 4 HP per cylinder, or in other words, 24 HP in a six cylinder engine.

The shop discussed in the article was Performance Engines, based at Brackett Field in La Verne CA (southern most end of California). Their website is:

http://www.performanceengines.com/

You should read the Aviation Consumer article. They address the very gray area as to the legality of this mod. It’s available online to subscribers at:

Horsepower

Well,

It was not in a skymaster but I have heard of several cases where this type of thing was done to an engine with less than positive results. If done improperly you could trash the cylinder(s).

Owen Bell also has some engine mods for the skymaster. I think they are similar to the Riley conversions, but are more affordable. His company is "Aviation Enterprises" I believe.

Air Filters

I also recently heard of significant HP increase by changing from the Brackett air filter to the K&M (I think that is the brand - regardless, it's something like that which you will find in TAP) air filter that is STCd for our birds. I know of one IA who swears by them as a fast and cheap way to increase HP.

FWIW
