Rudder Trim Position

A friend of mine is rigging a 337. He is a very experienced rigger, but hasn't done many 337's. On his behalf, I would ask how many of you typically have left, neutral, or right rudder trim set in cruise? How much?

About two years ago, we re-rigged my 1977 P337 per the service manual.

It had been messed with over time and was not flying straight with the aileron tabs up a fair bit on the left side and down equally on the right side and the ball to one side.

I made the required template which makes the job pretty straight forward. Set it up, flew it then added the extra 0.25" offset as was suggested in the service manual and flew it again.

The result was that the aileron tabs are now neutral, the ball is in the centre with the rudder trim a little over half way to the left side. I get very close to the book true airspeeds when flying at 55% and cerainly feels to be flying straight now.

As we are replacing cables this annual, we did no further work as a full re-rig will be required.

In talking to one person, experienced with 337's as they came from the factory, he suggested that the 0.25" offset was never enough. TBA

Also, always make sure you level the plane and adjust the T&B to centre the ball as a first step.

Just another point when rigging the rudder, make sure the nose wheel is off the ground and the pedals are clamped central.

There is a rigging hole in the rudder bellcrank for the center, which i think will give a 0.5" offset to the right with the pedals center.
