How to change the oil without mess?

Here's a problem that some of you must have. Whenever I change my oil, I make a mess. I have not found a way to remove the filter without spilling oil in both the front and rear engine compartments. In my previous maintenance situation, I just cleaned the engine compartment with solvent each time. But in my current situation, that is a more difficult task.

Does anyone out there have suggestions on how to do this without spilling oil?

Thanks,

Kevin

oil change

Kevin

I take a plastic bag (heavy duty type for kitchen under counter) and;

1) losen up the filter so you can remove it by hand.

2) put the bag around the filteter

3) have the bag catch much of the oil as possible.

4) carefully remove the filter and drop it into the bag.

5) carefully remove the bag and filter. (avoid tearing the bag).

alternative

cut an side of a 1/2 gallon bleach bottle and trim the sides so it sits under the oul filter. Use it to catch the drips when removing filter. I have cut down a regular qt oil jug and it works but has less capacity.

I find the first method easier but you need to find the heavier plastic bags when are less likely to leak. Just take your time in either case. It's like the cowl motor.... just keep trying until you become and expert.

It's easier every few years when you replace the engine. much easier access......

great suggestion, i'll try it next time; because on the rear eng the oil seem to get between the overlapping skin and solvent does not remove it completely. so for several fligths later it comes streaking out.
thank's rick
