The cable is called a "follow-up' cable, I believe, and it gives feedback to the control to shut the motor off (and on, I suppose). There are also limit switches at the motor end.

I had to replace mine a couple of years ago because it was rusted. Water leaked in the avionics access panel and dripped down into the console and into that cable. Make sure your access panel isn't leaking and that there are no chafing points where the cable housing can become penetrated or scuffed to allow water in. Lube it regularly (at annuals).
