This adapter is an intricate and in my opinion an ingenious mechanism.
After disassembly and thorough cleaning the measurements revealed that the shaft drum, the drive gear shank's steps and also the friction sleeve are all still within the standard tolerances. This is lucky since no machining required.
The only worn item was the spring. One was ordered from Niagara which arrived in 3 days.
Installation is a precise procedure and the TCM manual has to be followed precisely as well.
In addition, to be extra careful, the spring was heated by a heat gun and the drive gear frozen in the freezer to make an easier spring installation.
After that, the friction sleeve was heated again with the heat gun and the combination drive gear and the attached spring unit was cooled in the freezer. This insured an easier fit of the spring in the friction sleeve..
After this the T drive accessory was thoroughly cleaned and lubricated and assembled per TCM.
The assembly was then installed with new gaskets and safetied, the starter then reinstalled.
After installation tests revealed a perfect start every time without slippage.
Here is a PDF from Aircraft Specialties.
Hope this helps.
