Borescope ? or kick the tires.
If it is close to an annual then combine the two.
As I said it depends on the type of aircraft. A normally aspirated 337 should be relatively straight forward.
Why not contact laneaviation.com and see what they will charge.
The real problem comes when you find a major problem after you have just bought and the IA shrugs his shoulders and walks away. Been there!
