when to do G.U.M.P.S

Hi guys I would like to find out from as many of you when you recommend the GUMPS is stated?
The reason for my question is my instructure tells me to start the gumps but wont let me adjust the mixure to reach, and the props forward untill we are on base leg
any sugestion?

Thanks

My pattern does not conform to GUMPS particularly. Here is what I do:

Gas: I frankly don't check, as my tank selectors are never moved except during the annual. This will not work for pre-73 Skymasters. On my '65, I did it at the same time as the first gear check.

Gear check three times (downwind, base, and final or outermarker, below 1000' and short final if on straight in approach).

Mixture: I do not richen the mixture at all, I leave it leaned. If I have to do a go around, my pattern is Mixture, Props and Throttles forward in that order. This keeps the spark plugs from fowling during the approach.

Props: I put them forward on final, when I do my last power reduction. This works out to turning final during a normal pattern, and below 1000' on a straight in.

Hope that is not too complicated. It is what I do, FWIW.

re gumps

Kevin

Right on !

I always time the gear transistion time (mentally) then check light. Always check gear crossing mda or DH and at the outmarker or FAF on any approach.

re fuel selector.
Anytime I leave the AC in an unsecure location I always shut off fuel at the selector. I have a bright red ribbon that hangs from the knob as a placard. Just in case someone puts a fuel can under the drain outlet and pulls the fuel drain knob....

re props

I Never touch them unless a go-around. Leaving them in course pitch reduces the ambient noise level for those on the ground. The skymaster is not an acoustical stealth type AC. Besides one less thing to worry about during an approach. Why fiddle with things that do not need your attention.

You have it covered in your proceedure anyway. M/P/T :D

Good point Bob, never thought of that. I think I will modify my procedures as you suggest, leave the props at cruise RPM.

Thanks, it's nice to learn from this board, as usual...
