Hi Folks
I'm considering a purchase of a P337 but have never owned a sky master so I'm looking for owners feedback.

Pros and cons of the beast?

What are the great points and what are the negatives?

VLJ: a quick search of the board will yield lots to read. I'm also considering a 337, and have been systematically reading everything on this site to gain insight. There are "prospective buyers" threads that will answer many of your questions, and some you haven't thought to ask. Good luck.

This question has been asked hundreds of times. Please make a search for answers. Here is the best target to start with.

Jerry

do have:
de ice?
pressurized mags?
performance is as per POH?
you have the 360 engines... any issues?

rear engine over heat? myth or fact?

Turbo's ...any unusual issues?

do you have engine analyzer?

How many hours on your airframe?

Cost to maintain based on say 100Hours/year?

Annuals run 5 - 6k as a rule?

Whats most common issue in an annual or for regular maintenance?

Is your machine STOL equipped and is it helpful? Increase performance?

Have you added tip tanks? Is it worth the cost for the increased range? I read concerns about a wing spar issue?

I appreciate your feed back.

Gary

Hello VLJ,

I will answer your questions in order you asked.

1, Deice.....Yes. Wings, elevator and hot plate. The P337 also carries a load of ice. Boots not to be used until you have about 1/2 ice.

2, Pressurized Mags...Yes, works good.

3, Perf as per POH....If I stay low, under 10,000 feet I generally flight plan at 165 knots. with a fuel burn of 27 to 28 GPH. I tend to operate ROP and in doing so have run engines 1,000 hours over TBO. Over 10,000 feet, it will be fair to say you will get about 90 to 95 percent of book values.

4, Engines....TSIO-360-CB's 225 HP each.

5, Rear engine over heat....In flight a myth...on ground in hot humid weather like in Houston with long ground operation you must keep eye on it. However, my experience is while it may indicate over heating, within a few minutes of take-off speed it settles down to normal operating temperature.

6, Engine analyzer system....Yes. Great help.

7, Airframe 4,200 + hours

8, Hourly cost to maintain per 100 hour year....While from year to year it is different, it really has been fairly reasonable. As an average, less than $1,000This of course is less fuel, hanger fees, insurance etc. It is just general maint...oil changes and minor repairs.

9, Annuals....I have a free lance Mechanic and I assist in the annual...Less than $2,000 plus repairs. Some years zip other years several thousand dollars.

10, Common issue....Can't say there is a common issue.

11, STOL...No!

12 Tip tanks...No! And I recomend you don't get them. The P model from 1975 carries 150 gallons of fuel. The plane can go further than I can...

Wing Spar issue....Less than 10,000 hours doesn't appear to be an issue.

Where are you located? If near Michigan let me know I'll take you for a flight and see how it handles for yourself. Better yet, Early June the skymaster meeting is in DaytonOhio at Wright brothers airport. Don't need to own a skymaster to attend. Come join us and talk first hand to a lot of Skymaster owners. Best place to go to be fully informed.

Cheers!
Jerry
