Any experience with a pre-oiler system?
 

I was curious about the benefits (and existence of) this type of system and came across the infinity aerospace product. Seems fairly simple, as it's basically akin to your auxiliary fuel. As such, it also serves as a backup to the oil pump upon failure. Inexpensive product, and says it only requires a field approval and 337 form.

I haven't used one. I would question if it's worth it with the effectiveness of modern oils/oil additives?

We have one on our Cessna 185 it works very well we pump it up to 50 psi and then start it oil pressure is instantly reading instead of waiting for it to fill up all the oil passages

I considered pre-oilers years ago. What I found out was that about half the lubrication in an engine is from splash, which pre-oiler doesn't do.

The 'startup wear' is really only if the bearing surfaces have run dry (from sitting). A fellow on field tried an experiment, taking various oils painted on a piece of metal and let them sit. The single viscosity stuff stayed on MUCH MUCH longer. So I use straight 100w summer and straight 80 winter.

Mine is a turbo, so the compression is lower 8.5:1 I believe. Perhaps that and my secret starting technique (that will share) always starts. And am in Washington DC, so never that cold for very long. So thinning the oil to get an easier start not a factor.

I never preheat, and never pre-oil.

I always have oil analysis done with changes about every 50 hours or so.

Maybe I'm being lazy, but so far so good.

I have the airplane since 1998 and had both engines overhauled (upgraded to heavy case, large crank), over the years, but only when they needed it.
