Magneto Replacement

What is the Best way any easiest way to remove the rear magnetos and alternator on a 76 P337?

On the year aircraft you describe, there is an access panel in the rear firewall that will make magneto work much easier. You will need to take down the interior on the back firewall (from inside the cabin) to find the panel, and the panel can be removed by removing a few bolts.

Once you have this panel off, the magneto will come right out through this panel. You will also have to remove the alternator first obviously, but once you have, the panel will make pulling the magneto much easier.

Caveat: I am not a mechanic, but I have done this task under an A&P's supervision. My A&P says it is possible to get the mag out without removing the alternator, but it is difficult.

Aircraft '72 and earlier did not have this access panel, and magneto maintenance is more difficult on these airplanes.

Perhaps one of the mechanics on the site will step in with additional advice on the task you are asking about.

mag removal

I think removing the rear mags and alternator is much easier than on the front because of the access panel. I would remove the mags first. Removing the alt. may be easier if you also remove the oil filter adapter.
Hope this helps

Don't forget the alternator...

While you're messing around near the alternator, it's really a good idea to lay a piece of plastic wrap or something non-metallic around the fan openings of the alternator ... JUST IN CASE you drop a nut, a washer, or a bolt into the cage! Might make for having to do more work, not to mention that it could get a whole lot more expensive than just replacing mags!!!
