New cowl fasteners

So I bought all new stainless steel fasteners for all the cowls and avionics access panels. I tripled checked and I have the correct ones in the right position according to the parts manual. Most of them are a little tight/tough to lock, but they do. However I have a couple on every panel that just don’t seem long enough and won’t lock, no matter how hard I push them in.

Does anyone have any experience with this and/or a fix for the few difficult ones?

Thanks.

The cowl fastners I have used come in different lengths based on each individual spot. Are all your fastners the same number?

Like these camlocs are sold in different sizes by dash number. Not sure if this is the brand I have but the format is the same, mine are phillips head

Herb,

Based on the parts manual, the front left cowl has 3 different sizes, the right has one size and the rear cowls all use the same. I've switched some of the impossible ones to a size longer and they work. My guess now is that over time the backing plate has stretched, wiggled or just moved enough to require an extra millimeter or two of fastener to work properly.

For example: The rear cowls use a -2 millimeter and that worked on all but about 3 on each side in different locations. I pulled out the -2 and used extra -3 fasteners and they worked fine.

My solution has been to order a few more longer fasteners from Skybolt and go up 1 millimeter on the fasteners that wouldn't quite lock. It's not what the book says, but it's what works and I'm pretty sure what the previous owner had installed.

Thanks,

Tripp

Hi Tripp

I did the same, ordered off the parts manual but also included a number of spares which I ended up using as many were just to difficult to lock. Also found the same with the avionics panel, ended up using two sizes.

New cowl fasteners

Trippster.
FYI the length is equal to .030" per dash number, I'm not sure of the millimeter conversion but I too had the same problem. I'm thinking it was the corners of the cowl and or access panel that required a longer camloc?
Regards.

Thanks,

The new longer fasteners arrived today, so tomorrow we will see if they do the job.
