flying article june 337p

R collins writes in June about adam comparing 337p. he states there are 56 on register out of 300 manfactured. Do we have 250 wrecked p skymasters? J

No, Collins always gets that wrong. Correct numbers for about six months ago are on this page of this site:

http://www.337skymaster.com/fwiw.htm

I don't know why he keeps saying 50. I guess I need to write him a letter...

I think the confusion comes from the fact that "P337" is not a valid Cessna model. Pressurized 337's are either a P337H or a T337G. Regardless, 4 registrations actually use the P337 model designator.

Here's what Landings.com has listed:

 P337 =   4
P337H =  52
T337G = 195

Total Pressurized Skymasters in US Registry = 251

When I do the numbers on the page referenced previously, I use a script that I wrote that querys a copy I download of the entire US registry database. There are some other ways people reference P's that are not on your list. The only ones I can remember right now are T337G, T337HP and T337GP, for example. T337H's are not pressurized. But I bet at least a few late model P's are registered as T337H's (instead of HP). If I was really ambitious, I could figure that out from serial number ranges maybe...

Modesty aside, the method I use to generate the numbers on this site leads to the most accurate count that I know of anywhere.

On the other hand, the last time I did the numbers was Summer 2002. Guess I had better get it updated.

The numbers that Kevin McDole provided are probably very close.

re identification

The earlier "P"s should be T337GP.

BTW ICAO has changed references for the skymaster. You can file as a P337 which designates pressurized. I get the odd query "what is a "P" 337" from the controllers.

They also use T337 for turbo.

ICAO has dropped the "skymaster" designation but is still used in north america.

The earlier P's are supposed to be T337GP's, but they are not all registered that way. The designation on the registration is whatever the person filling out the form uses, and I do not believe there is any edit on that by the FAA. Many T337G's are registered, and to my knowledge, there is no such airplane, as the turbo, non-pressurized airplanes did not start getting built again until the H model series.

To the best of my ability, I have assembled a list of all FAA "Aircraft Codes" for Skymasters.

  Model    Code&nbsp ;  Registered
   336    &nbsp ;2075602  94
   337    &nbsp ;2075702 147
 T-337     2075703 &nbs p; 0
   337A    2075 704 127
   337A    2075 705   1 (Custom 605HP 337A)
   337B    2075 706 106
  T337B    2075707&n bsp; 36
  M337B    2075708&n bsp; 38 (Military O2)
   337C    2075 712  76
  T337C    2075714&n bsp; 36
   337D    2075 717  74
  T337D    2075719&n bsp; 24
   337E    2075 721  45
  T337E    2075723&n bsp; 22
 FT337E    7535708 & nbsp; 2
   337F    2075 725  47
  T337F    2075724&n bsp;  9
  F337F    7535716&n bsp;  1
   337G    2075 730 171
  F337G    7535719&n bsp;  1
   337H    2075 732  29
  T337H    2075733&n bsp; 32
  F337H    7535722&n bsp;  1
FTB337G    7535727    1 (Basler Turbo Prop Conversion)

The following are presumed to be pressurized:
  T337G    2075726&n bsp;195
 FT337GP   7535726    6
  P337     2075 727   4
  P337H    2075731&n bsp; 52
  T337H-SP 2073015   0

Total P337s in the US registry = 257

Incidentally, a search of the registry for serial numbers that contain P337 returns 252 aircraft.

That sure looks like the right stuff. Good job! Do you want to write to Collins, or shall I?

Kevin

Kevin McDole 06-16-03 02:25 AM

Thanks for volunteering. :D I'll let you write the letter (especially since I have not yet read the article and don't know what it actually says).

kevin 06-16-03 01:18 PM

I am always the guy that does NOT take the step backwards... ;-)

I'll email him. We have corresponded before. Nice guy....

Kevin

kevin 06-19-03 07:21 PM

Well, I can't find Collin's email address, but I have sent a letter to the editor of Flying on this, no response yet...

Here is Dick Collins reply:

"Dear Kevin:

Thanks for the information. We used the number of aircraft on the Registry from Vref, an aircraft value reference. We have used their numbers before and they are usually correct--not this time, though.

Best wishes, Dick Collins"
