P model purchase

With 600 hrs tt and 70 multi time (in a P aerostar)and my partners have 650 and 400 respectfully and no multi rating what obstacles will we face if purchasing a P model Skymaster?
Ie can we get insurance?

Jerry De Santis 07-14-03 06:29 PM

Insurance

Kevin, With your 600 hour single and 70 hour mulit time you should be able to get insurance without much of a problem. Your partner however, will most likely be restricted from the policy until he earns his multi or center line rating and after that, most likely will require about 25 hours in type before he will get insurance.

re insurance

In my opinion the insurance companies are demanding recurrent training and an instrument rating as minimum for a "P". They will give you some time to get the classification completed. Not sure about the hours but probably based on an individual basis.

Guess if you fly with the eagles you pay the vultures...... oops....

Bought my P model a year and a half ago. Only had about 400 hours TT, no multi and no IFR. Insurance co. insured the plane as long as I had my instructor on board while working on my multi. As soon as I had that, I could fly solo. Insurance co. did not require the IFR rating but I got it about 3 mo. after getting the multi. Put 262 hours on the plane last year and this year the insurance co. cut the premium in half so guess the IFR rating paid off. (in more ways than one)

Don who did the insurance?

Kevin B 07-30-03 09:08 AM

Just got my insurance quote back. $150,000 hull value for me $4168.00 15 hrs dual. For my partners a whopping $10,300.00!!!!!!!! 25 hrs dual and solo
Looks like I will not be joining the ranks of the P337 flyers unless some out there can help!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Baron is a lot less to insure

kevin 07-30-03 10:10 AM

That's weird. The Baron is *less* for your partners... Man, insurance is out of control. How much is the Baron, if you don't mind sharing?

Must be insurance company fear of pressurized airplanes....

I am surprised as well. The Baron is about 2500 less per year for the same hull value. We could do the P337 even if it was at $8000.00 but not $10,300.00

Did you try Skysmith Int'l? They are a broker for 337's and do the ins. for a whole bunch of us. Their quotes are usually significantly less than the outside market:

515-289-1439

Scott Smith is the owner of the agency, and you might ask to talk to him personally, explaining the situation and seeing what he can recomend.

That's who did the qoute!!!

P-Model

Kevin, I am sure the rates are that high because it is a press. unit. I have more than 1900 hours multi time of which about 1800 are in Skymasters with over 1000 hours in p-models. to keep insurance reasonable I only claim $125,000 hull and four seats and best rate I found was $3800.00. If you are going to compare the rates with a Baron, get rate for non-P model Skymaster. I am sure you will find the Baron much higher.

Cheers
Jerry

Jerry I thought the same and the rate was all most the same. I think that if my partners had even 50 or so of multi. hours it would be much better. We'll build some twin time and then step back up to a P model. I'm still working the phones hoping to find a better deal.
