Alternator SDR

Hi, my rear alternator started to came apart on itself. the case literally started to separate as a result of the bolts holding it together coming loose. On the replacement alternator there is a red sticker that tells you to re-torque the bolts to 70-85 inch pounds at 10 hrs and then every 100 hours thereafter.I wish an AD went out on that one. It could have saved me about $800.00.

Check your alternator casing bolts!

Thanks
Gord

Are you referring to the bolts that attach the alternator to the accessory case? or the bolts that hold the actual alternator together?

It's the bolts that hold the unit itself together.

Should have been safety wired

I learned today that it was in fact safety wired but that the casing halves themselves somehow vibrate, shake and otherwise shift. Looking at the unit you can see that there are a number of pieces that are sandwiched together ( stator I believe) and it is these pieces that start to float after a while. My newly overhauled alternator clearly states that the bolts should be torqued at 10 hrs, then at 100 hrs. thereafter to 70 - 85 inch pounds.
