Instructor w/ airplane and DPE all in one place?

I am interested in a 337s. I would like to find an instructor with 337 and a 337 DPE all in the same area.

Is there anyone like that? I don’t mind going out of town or out of state for a few weeks.

Thanks!

You are asking the almost impossible

Thanks!

I'll give them a call today and I'll report back here what I find out.

Thanks again.

I just called and talked to Maria.

I explained that I wanted to get my MEIL rating and asked if they did that. She said they weren't doing that at the current time but that they may start sometime in the future. She said that if I would send her an email she would notify me if and when they started MEIL training up again.

Thanks again for the lead!

In my opinion, I would go get your MEL in a regular twin at a school like ATP or something. take a week at a time and punch it out. Then find out what the insurance needs to fly your Skymaster. Most of the time it might only require a mentor time to get enough hours to be on your own as PIC. Then you have a full Multi Engine certificate that gives you lots of options down the road.

Lots of guys say they will never fly anything but a Skymaster so it's a waste of money and time. Well with the lack of Skymaster CFI's and DPE's I have to say that it's really the most logical choice. Also if you go somewhere away from home base and can just focus on training and not day to day interruptions it will be a much more useful situation.

I sure agree with this advice!

hharney thank you for your post.

I just turned 65. When I got my instrument rating a couple of summers ago it took me a lot longer than the young guys. I had hoped to fly a 337 during my multi engine training to see if I was going to be able to comfortably fly it.

Thanks again everybody.

Good luck Mike, it's good to see another 337 flying in Texas. My goal is to get my CFI-I & CFI-MEL back, I let it expire, but I'm still trying to work out a time and the where. My plan is to go to an accelerated course and get it done.

If you get the training in a conventional ME, you will have no problem with the Skymaster. I would think the certificate from both the school and the FAA would help your insurance as well plus in effect, you will have a current IPC when it is finished.

My guess is the school would be cheaper than getting a 337 specific CFI to your location. If they are teaching for a living, they are not going to want to leave their client base without heavy compensation.

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, I hope to find a MEIL CFI with his own 337 that I could train in. At the end, if I was comfortable with the 337, I would take my check ride in the CFI’s 337 with a 337 DPE in the same area as the CFI. I would train wherever that CFI lives.

If I didn’t think I was up to flying 337s I’d just go home.

You might get ahold of Mike's Aircraft in Terrell. There is a note that the Apache is out of service right now, but it might be an annual or something of the short term. The website says that the add on is done over 3 to 4 days for $2500.

Fremont, OH (14G). Rex Damschroder, the owner of Rex Air has a few Skymasters and will train locally in them.

337 cfi and DE in Siler City, NC

One of the pilots that flies Skymasters for Orion is a MEIL CFI. He has over 1600hrs in our 337s in the last 7 years. I am willing to rent one of our skymasters for training, and we have an excellent DE that comes to our field regularly. Contact me at 919-742-4866 and we can see if something can be worked out.

Ed
