Propeller, HELP!!

I have been using a McCauley D2AF34C59-NP on my 337G for the last ten years and have gone through two OH without any problems. My mechanic tells me he have found out on a data sheet that the front propeller has to be a McCauley D2AF34C306/78CAA-O. I have already requested Customer Support at McCauley Propellers if there is something wrong. Any ideas? Thanks. Chachi

(Edit was just to fix spelling error in title, no big deal. -webmaster)

Chachi:

Went to the FAA Certification Data and downloaded the A6CE file which covers the Skymaster. On a 337G the number you give (D2AF34C306/78CAA-O) is the right one through aircraft s/n 1748, but later units use D2AF34C310/90DEA-12. No 337G uses D2AF34C59-NP. My suggestion is that you call everybody that overhauls propellers to see if you can find one. Also try the yards which part-out Skymasters, with emphasis on Don Nieser at Commodore (for phone numbers and a longer list of yards go to www.SkymasterUS.com and click on "Purchasing Parts").

Good luck.

Your mechanic is right, the TYPE CERTIFICATE DATA WORK SHEET for a 337G shows "D2AF34C306" for S/N 33701463 through 33701748 and "D2F34C310" for S/N 33701449, 33701749 and up.
But living in Mexico I am not sure I would worry about it. You need to check with your insurance company to make sure it is ok with them.

Thanks Ernie and Fred, I have the same information you got from the Certification data sheet but at this moment what I´m trying to find out from McCauley is which airplane is using the propeller I have, since originally it came out of a 337, and/or if there is an STC that would allow me to continue using the same propeller without any risk. I would not like to have HP-669 sitting on the hangar while I´m looking for a prop to replace the one I have been using for so many years plus how much is this going to cost (safety first). Thanks again to both of you, Fred I am in Panama. Chachi

Chachi:

I searched A6CE for all Skymasters and none uses D2AF34C59-NP, so if your prop came from a Skymaster it may have also been unauthorized, unless it was an O-2 or covered by an STC.

one time i used a front 336 prop. ours is a 73p model. it worked fine.

We did a search for the propeller McCauley D2AF34C59, the one I have been using, in ATP (Aircraft Technical Publishers) and found that there is a Data Sheet dated 10/11/2001 from Cessna Aircraft Company. That prop is to be used on the front engine of the 337, 337A, 337B, 337C, 337D, 337E and 337F.
Cessna changed the propeller on the 337G and that is when the Skymaster got some real changes like the split airstair entry door among others.
The question we are asking Cessna is if there would be any "risk" in using that prop on a 337G model but flying it under the certified operations parameters of an 337F.
Ernie, under the Data Sheet in reference you should have been using that propeller on the previous Skymaster you owned. Thanks, Chachi

Chachi:

That's not what my FAA certification document says, and I looked at all 337's, including 337A-337F. You have a D2AF34C59-NP prop. Models 337A-337F use a D2AF34C59/76C. I don't know what the differences are (-NP compared to /76C), but the number isn't the same. If you send me your e-mail address I'll send you the FAA A6CE file in Adobe Acrobat format, so you can see it.

Also, went to see FAA document A2CE which covers the 336 and it uses for front prop D2AF34C46/76C or D2AF34C60/76C, so your prop didn't come from a 336, either.

The 76C is not part of that part #, it is part of anouther part #. The 2 letters at the end of D2AF34C59-NP, The "N" sayes the hub has been Shot Peening & Truncated and the "P" sayes there was a hole drilled in the hub and a plug inserted after it was filled with a red dye oil.
BTW on my 337B I have D2AF34C59-NP and D2AF34C61-NP
Hope this helps !!!!

Ok, McCauley said that there is no risk and it should work fine if you use the D2AF34C59-NP on a 337G as long as the airplane is operated under the speed and weight limitations of a 337F, but is not legal. I have been given, from our aviation authority, a temporary airworthines certificate to operate HP-669 up until I get the right propeller. Therefore I need to get me a prop for the front engine of a 337G as soon as posible. Chachi

Bummer Chachi. Sorry to hear you must replace the prop. Maybe you can make a swap with a propellor shop or a boneyard? Or just retain the propellor, sooner or later someone with a 337 through 337F will be looking for one, you may get the best price that way...

Good luck with it.

Kevin
